Teaching English in Lyon, France: The Complete 2026 Guide

For English teachers, Lyon is one of the most exciting cities in Europe to work in. As both a culinary capital and a thriving business centre, it combines an exceptional quality of life with genuine, growing demand for English language instruction. Whether you hold years of classroom experience or have just completed your TEFL certification, Lyon will not disappoint — and PrepMyEnglish is actively recruiting talented English teachers.

Why Lyon Stands Out for English Teachers in France

Paris may dominate the headlines, but Lyon has firmly established itself as a top destination for English language teachers. Read on to find out why.

A Major Economic and Business Hub

Lyon hosts a large concentration of international businesses across industries including pharmaceuticals, finance, logistics, and technology. The presence of so many global firms generates consistent demand for Business English, professional training, and certification preparation — all areas in which PrepMyEnglish specialises. Working in Lyon means teaching motivated adults whose English skills directly shape their professional futures.

An Outstanding Quality of Life

Lyon regularly features in rankings of Europe's most liveable cities. The cost of living is considerably lower than in Paris, with city-centre one-bedroom flats starting from around €600–€800 monthly. Lyon's location — between the Alps, the vineyards of the Rhône-Alpes, and the Mediterranean — makes it a perfect base for exploring France and beyond. Excellent transport links, including metro, tram, and an international airport, place Italy and Switzerland within easy reach.

A Thriving English Teaching Market

Unlike smaller cities, Lyon sustains a robust market for English instruction across all learner profiles: corporate learners, exam candidates, adult general English students, and teenagers at every level of proficiency. For teachers, this translates into a richly varied and genuinely fulfilling workload.

What Qualifications Do You Need to Teach English in Lyon?

At PrepMyEnglish, we copyright high standards to ensure the best outcomes for our learners. To be considered for a teaching role, you will typically need the following.

An Accredited English Teaching Certification

The foundational qualification for teaching English in France is a CELTA, TEFL, or TESOL certificate. A 120-hour accredited course is the widely accepted standard. Having one of these qualifications shows that your teaching skills have been formally assessed and developed.

We consider applications from teachers who hold:

CELTA — a Cambridge Assessment qualification that is recognised worldwide

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) — widely accepted, especially 120-hour accredited courses

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) — recognised qualification, particularly for those with North American backgrounds

BA or Master's in English Linguistics or a related discipline

Teaching Experience

Teaching experience is important. Our students range from teenagers sitting school exams to senior executives preparing for high-stakes business presentations. The more experience you bring, the more value you can add. However, we welcome applications from teachers at every stage of their career, including those with fewer than three years of experience who show clear potential.

A Commitment to Differentiated Teaching

Our core philosophy is simple: one size does not fit all. Each student has their own goals, background knowledge, and preferred way of learning. We seek teachers who can tailor their methods to each learner, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

English Teaching Job Types in Lyon

The English teaching market in Lyon is varied, and PrepMyEnglish reflects that breadth in our own curriculum and teaching needs.

Certification Exam Coaching

In France, exam preparation is among the most sought-after areas of English language teaching. We run preparation courses for a wide range of certifications including TOEIC, TOEFL, copyright, GMAT, Linguaskill, and Cambridge Assessment. Teachers with experience coaching students toward specific test scores are particularly valuable in this area.

PrepMyEnglish holds official copyright test centre status in partnership with the British Council — an institution with unrivalled credibility in English language assessment worldwide. Teachers work in an environment where preparation and the official exam itself are delivered in the same place. For any teacher with copyright expertise, the opportunity to work within an official British Council test centre is a significant professional advantage.

General English for Adults (A1–C2)

We teach adult learners at every level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), from complete beginners through to advanced users seeking near-native fluency. Group classes, one-to-one sessions, and intensive formats are all part of the mix.

Business and Professional English

Business English, Legal English, Medical English, and other specialist courses are in constant demand thanks to Lyon's thriving corporate sector. If you have a background in one of these professional fields as well as teaching qualifications, you could be an especially strong candidate.

Teenage English Courses

We also offer English courses for teenagers (adolescents), helping younger learners build the skills they need for their studies and future careers. If you enjoy teaching teenagers and are skilled at managing young learner classrooms, we encourage you to apply.

What to Expect in Terms of Salary and Working Life in Lyon

What you earn as an English teacher in Lyon will depend on your employer, your subject specialisation, and your experience level. A full-time teaching position at a Lyon language school generally offers a net monthly salary of around €1,200–€2,000. Hourly rates for private tutoring typically range from €25–€45, depending on specialisation and experience.

Lyon language schools generally offer flexible timetables that blend mornings, evenings, and weekends to meet the diverse availability of learners. This flexibility is highly valued by teachers who want variety in their schedule without sacrificing financial stability.

Visas and Work Permits for English Teachers in Lyon

If you hold EU, EEA, or Swiss citizenship, you are free to work in France without a copyright or permit. European citizens can move to Lyon, apply for positions, and start teaching without needing to navigate complex copyright processes.

Non-EU citizens (including Americans, Canadians, Australians, and others) should be aware that obtaining a standard French copyright through the private sector is complex. The most established route for non-EU graduates is the TAPIF programme (Teaching Assistant Program in France), a government-operated scheme that sponsors visas for assistant teachers in French schools. It is strongly advisable to clarify your copyright situation before applying for private-sector positions.

We welcome applicants of all nationalities, provided they hold valid authorisation to work in France.
